John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) was made on a shoestring budget of just $300,000 and went on to gross over $70 million, effectively launching the slasher genre as we know it. The iconic Michael Myers mask was actually a modified Captain Kirk mask purchased for $1.98, spray-painted white with the eye holes enlarged. Carpenter composed the legendary synth score himself in just three days, and the film’s opening POV shot—revealing the killer as a six-year-old—was revolutionary for its time. Halloween established the “final girl” trope and inspired countless imitators, cementing its place as one of the most influential horror films ever made.
