George Pavlou’s Rawhead Rex (1986) adapts Clive Barker’s short story about an ancient pagan demon unleashed from beneath an Irish field, and Barker was so dissatisfied with the resulting film—particularly the creature design, which he compared to a “nine-foot phallus with teeth”—that he resolved to direct his own work, leading directly to the creation of Hellraiser. The film was shot on location in County Wicklow, Ireland, and despite its budgetary limitations, captures the misty, ancient atmosphere of the Irish countryside where the story takes place. The creature suit, while maligned by Barker, has its own low-budget charm and the film contains several genuinely shocking scenes, including a baptism-by-urination sequence that remains one of the most transgressive moments in 1980s horror.
