Mark Herrier’s Popcorn (1991) is a love letter to William Castle-style gimmick cinema, set during a horror movie marathon at an old movie palace where a masked killer begins picking off film students one by one as the audience enjoys films-within-the-film complete with buzzing seats and 3D glasses. The movie-within-a-movie sequences—parodies of 1950s creature features called Mosquito!, The Attack of the Amazing Electrified Man, and The Stench—are so lovingly crafted that they feel like genuine lost B-movies from the atomic age.
